Derbyshire police use fake builder’s van to catch speeding motorists
The boys in blue, blue builder’s van that is.
Since the recent pictures of the Derbyshire police repainting their mobile speed camera van blue to catch out drivers appeared on the interent, the pictures have been widely published in several national newspapers.
It is amazing the lengths that the police have gone to in order to make the ‘builder’s van’ look authentic.
You will notice how they have carefully piled up drinks containers, newspapers and fast food cartons inside the windscreen to give the van that authentic ‘on a tea break’ look. Although it is not too clear in the photograph below, there is even a Screwfix catalogue perched on the top of the dashboard.

One of the van wheels has also been painted black in an effort to make it appear used, abused and more life like. Seems that they have forgotten to use masking tape in a cross shape to fix the tax disc to the windscreen though, total giveaway!
Although not too clear in the second photograph, the van also has fake plasterboard dust around the rear of the vehicle and also on the rear bumper, in another attempt to create that authentic working van look.
The sneaky attempt to disguise the mobile speed camera van sparked outrage when it first appeared on the interent.
Brian Gregory, of the Association of British Drivers, said: “They are appearing to go down exactly the same route as the police in Australia and America”.

He added “In one case in America an officer actually dressed up as a tramp while operating a speed trap, I wonder how long it will be before that starts happening over here?”.
In the second photograph, you can clearly see the tell tale fold down window where the speed camera points out towards passing vehicles.
